Development of a Measurement Tool for Rest Distrubing Factors During Hospitalization

Abstract
Rest disturbing factors during hospitalization-Was extracted as a preliminary study to develop a tool to measure degree of disturbance recognized by hospitalized patients.
A questionnaire was constructed including 57 items describing situations disturbing rest during hospitalization, which were found through in-depth literature review. One hundred and forty patients were participated who were hospitalized in internal medicine units of Seoul National University Hospital between June 28 and July 31, 1982.
Subjects were given instruction to rate 1-5 Likert type scale (not disturbed, little dis4bed, don¢¥t know, a little disturbed, severely disturbed) according to degree of disturbance recognized from each item described.
The result ",were analized by using factor analysis technique with PAI quartirmax in SPSS package to recorganize related items toge}her. Factors larger than eigenvalue 1.0 were accepted.
Reliability of the tool was tested, correlation between items by Cronbach¢¥s alpha method was T=0.8987. Eighteen factors obtained in the study was 69.5% of the variance.
The 18 factors were : 1) Uneasy personal relationships in the room, 2) limitations of physical activity, 3) Lack of attention from families and friends, 4) Unappropriate physical enviremment, 5) Lack of care from medical team, 6) Loss of role as a family member, 7) Lack of communication to medical personnels, 8) Lack of trust toward the medical team, 9) Boredom of hospitalization, 10) Change of rhythm in daily living, 11) Uncertain disease prognosis. 12) Socioeconomical unstability, 13) Too much of attention from family and friends, 14) Unfavorable hospital diet. 15) Change of living environment, 16) Discomfort from treatment, examination and tests, 17) Change in appearance, and 18) Fear of death.
